The story of our restaurant in Murano Venice

  • descrizione
The ‘Osteria al Duomo’ is a restaurant in Murano (Venice) known locally as the Murano Co-op.

Founded on 20th December 1903 by Luigi Cerutti, the parish priest of St. Mary and St. Donato Church, and a group of workers, originally opened as a co-operative shop to sell groceries to the Muranese workers and ease their hard living conditions.

From that day onwards fifty partners have passed down from father to son their collective ownership of this restaurant in Murano (Venice), acting together for the benefit of the community, financing and promoting religious, cultural and social events. Some of their family names can be found in the Golden Book, an ancient register dating from 1602 and the earliest record for Murano Council members, for glass factory workers and for Murano Citizens who therefore were granted special privileges.

It’s not well known but Murano was an autonomous township with its own self governing administration until annexed to Venice in 1923! The people protested strongly against this decision and raised an enormous rooster, symbol of Murano,by the Column.  But that’s a story we’ll tell you while you’ll be tasting the best typical venetian food in Murano…
